SEBASTIAN – The Board of County Commissioners Tuesday approved the demolition of the home of Sebastian pioneer Paul Kroegel’s son, Rodney Kroegel.
Commissioners also approved a contract to demolish several other buildings on various properties throughout the county.
The Rodney Kroegel site is located at 11296 Indian River Drive, along the river not far from US 1.
Paul Kroegel’s home, however, will be safe from the wrecking ball, according to the county. It is not amongst the list of properties targeted for demolition.
The county used environmental bonds to purchase the 2.76-acre site in 2002 for $350,000. Since then, the land value of the property, according to the Indian River County Property Appraiser’s website, has fluctuated between the low $200,000s and the near-mid-$900,000s.
In 2010, though, the value dropped from more than $300,000 to $209,000.
Demolition of the Rodney Kroegel home is estimated to cost $6,432.
Other properties the county is set to demolish include:

4705 66th Ave. Vero Beach – $12,431
5570 85th St., Vero Beach – $6,681
Metal restroom building at 16th Street ball field complex – $500
The 66th Avenue properties and the one on 85th Street are to be taken down as part of right-of-way acquisitions of the county for future road projects.
DJP General Contracting Service Inc., of Ft. Pierce, will conduct the work.
