Alan Francis Bartol, 68, died April 13, 2011, at the Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach.
He was born in Towanda, Pa., and lived in Vero Beach since 1994, coming from Miami, where he had spent most of his life.
After graduating from the University of Miami in 1964, he joined the Coast Guard.
He started his flying career as a co-pilot with National Airlines in 1966 at age 24 and became a captain at age 30, continuing with National Airlines through their merger with Pan American World Airways, and retiring in December 1991 as a captain with Pan Am.
Survivors include his daughter, Alexa Kalino of Los Angeles.
A memorial service will be at a later date.
