Middle School rezoning plan could be approved tonight

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The plan to rezone three middle schools could be approved tonight when the Indian River County School Board meets in the County Commission Chambers.

Expecting a larger-than-usual turnout, the School Board requested the meeting be held in the Commission Chambers.  The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

Under the revised middle school rezoning proposal, certain areas of Sebastian River Middle and Gifford Middle’s territories will be rezoned for Storm Grove Middle.

Oslo Middle School students will not be affected by the rezoning.

In an attempt to make the rezoning more “palatable” – as School District staff have described – the current proposal would phase the rezonings over two years, the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.

Students currently in sixth and seventh grade at either Sebastian River or Gifford will be given the option to remain at their school. Transportation would be provided by the School District.

Parents of those students would be required to notify the School District of their student’s choice to remain at their school. Failure to do so could result in the student being transferred to Storm Grove.

Current elementary school students who have siblings attending Sebastian River or Gifford could be granted the option to attend the same middle school as their older sibling under the revised plan.

Transportation would be provided for two school years only.

Before the School Board votes on the proposed rezoning plan, it will take input from the public. Those wishing to speak should plan to arrive at the meeting prior to 6 p.m. to fill out a public speaking form.
