Vero Beach Police, Sheriff nab 4 accused auto burglars, bike thieves

VERO BEACH – The Vero Beach Police Department and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office have arrested four juveniles accused of stealing numerous items from 26 vehicles in a 48-hour period.

Authorities announced Friday that 18 vehicles within the City of Vero Beach and eight in the county had been burglarized, so targeted because they were left unsecured. Four bicycles, equally unsecured, left in various yards were also taken.

At 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 17, a Sheriff’s deputy responded to the 3900 block of 44th Street in reference to four suspicious juvenile males.

Upon the deputy’s arrival, the subjects fled on foot leaving their four bikes as well as a black duffel bag, authorities said.

One of the subjects was apprehended by the Sheriff’s Office and through the course of the investigation authorities learned that he and the three other juveniles who ran had been involved in the vehicular burglaries throughout the city and county.

Detectives from both the Vero Beach Police Department and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office were able to determine that all four bicycles were stolen the night prior within the city limits of Vero Beach and the black duffel bag contained a cache of stolen items as well to include:

Boxing Gloves

Miscellaneous change

8 navigational devices

2 digital cameras

It was determined that in addition to the bicycles, the boxing gloves and six of the eight GPS instruments were stolen from within the city limits and the remainder of the items were taken from burglaries that occurred inside the County.

There are several other similar burglaries that have occurred during the past week that are still being investigated by both agencies. Authorities believe the burglaries could be related to the suspects based on mode of entry and items taken.

All four suspects are juveniles and numerous burglary and theft charges are pending on each. They have not been identified.
