Josephine N. Sczurek, 91, Vero Beach

Josephine N. Sczurek, 91, died March 8, 2011, at VNA Hospice, Vero Beach.

She was born in Meriden, Conn., and lived in Vero Beach for 27 years.

She was retired.

She was a member of the Weeders and Seeders Garden Club in Vero Beach.

Survivors include sons, Frank J. Sczurek Jr., of Wellington, Robert J. Sczurek, of Cape Coral, and Stephen J. Sczurek, of Vero Beach; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded by her husband of 44 years, Frank Sczurek, brothers, Edward Noster, Alfred Noster and Thaddeus Noster; and a sister, Irene Cobuzzi.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice House, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Arrangements are by Aycock Funeral Home, Fort Pierce.

Man shot after charging at deputy with small sword

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 29-year-old man who was shot by a deputy after charging at the officer with a small sword, was hospitalized late Friday, officials said. The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. The deputy who fired the shot was not injured. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for police-involved shootings. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
