25th Annual Citrus Golf Classic expands with “Hole in One” contest

VERO BEACH — The 25th Annual Citrus Golf Classic to benefit the United Way is scheduled for Saturday, February 26 at the Club at Pointe West in Vero Beach.  The three tier golf event kicks off with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. and concludes with a luncheon and awards presentation at 1 p.m. This year’s event features a “Hole in One” tournament with the possibility of winning a 2010 Jeep Compass, sponsored by Vero Beach Chrysler Jeep Dodge.

The annual event, traditionally sponsored almost exclusively by the citrus industry, is a staple of the United Way annual fundraising campaign, generating over $40,000 in much needed revenue for the organization.

Response to this year’s event has been “over the top” stated United Way’s Director of Workplace Giving, Faith Frazier adding, “So much so that we are now on a wait and see basis for additional foursomes.”

Sponsorships are a mainstay of the event and Publix Supermarkets Charities continues their role as Florida’s number one supporter of United Way.  Gold Sponsors to date include: Bayer/Movento, Silver Sponsor: George E. Warren Corporation and Decco USA, Bronze Sponsor: CenterState Bank, Dupont Crop Protection, Kmetz, Nuttall, Elwell & Graham.

“For 25 years this tournament has highlighted the many ways that the Citrus and Agriculture industries support health and human services in our community. United Way and the citrus community have a rich history.  Twenty-five years ago Bill Marine founded this tournament which is now a big part of United Way’s annual campaign efforts,” said Scott Lambeth, corporate treasurer and production manager for Golden River Fruit Company, and United Way volunteer agri-business co-chair.

Lambeth would like to see 128 golfers, a full field, registered to maximize the dollars for United Way. Last year the tournament raised more than $42,000 in support of the United Way community impact agenda which focuses on addressing priority issues such as healthy children, strong families and successful youth in Indian River County.

United Way of Indian River has reached 80% of its $2.4 million dollar goal. Campaign volunteers will announce the final results at a special thank you and appreciation event scheduled for March 22th.
