Hazel Ione Mitchell (nee Vosburgh), 90, died Feb. 17, 2011, in Vero Beach.
She was born Nov. 13, 1920, in Murfreesboro, Tenn., to Arthur and Susie Anna Vosburgh and the loving sister of Oran, Virginia, Buster, Gene, Evelyn and Iris.
A valedictorian in high school, she graduated from Middle Tennessee State University and began a brief teaching career before she joined the Navy in WWII serving as a supply officer.
There she met and married the late Robert L. Mitchell, of Garden City, N.Y., on Aug. 24, 1947, and devoted herself to raising three children, Suzanne Mitchell, of Louisville, Ky., Robert Jr., of Tacoma Wash., and Jeanne Mitchell Orefice, of Pelham, N.Y.
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was a beloved friend and dedicated volunteer serving her communities for decades.
Survivors include her children, sons-in-law, Carl Maupin, John Orefice; daughter-in-law Katrina and grandchildren Daniel, Benjamin, Dallas, Joanna and Mitchell.
All who knew her were touched by her kindness and grace.
The family will be having a private service.
