Vera S. Bader, 90, Vero Beach

Vera S. Bader, 90, died Feb. 8, 2011, at her home.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Vero Beach for 28 years, coming from Delray Beach.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach.

Survivors include her daughters, Elizabeth A. Van Horn, of Bend, Ore., Carol L. Baron, of Stuart and Diane J. Meyers, of Mesa, Ariz.; brother, John Strash, of Longview, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Julius M. Bader, in 1987.

Services and interment will be private.

Arrangements are by Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory of Vero Beach.

Man shot after charging at deputy with small sword

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 29-year-old man who was shot by a deputy after charging at the officer with a small sword, was hospitalized late Friday, officials said. The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. The deputy who fired the shot was not injured. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for police-involved shootings. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
