Even Hands Can See Art Show at Florida Eye Institute

VERO BEACH – The Florida Eye Institute (FEI), in support of the Treasure Coast Resource Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, will be hosting a unique art show titled Even Hands Can See, from 2 to 6 pm in conjunction with the City of Vero Beach 10th Anniversary Celebration of Royal Palm Pointe on Saturday, February 26. FEI has acquired exclusive rights to the ‘touchable paintings’ created by international renowned artist, Horst Mueller as a result of their partnership with the Treasure Coast Resource Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired.  Mueller creates 3 dimensional paintings described as ‘barrier free art for all people’ which can be enjoyed and sampled through the senses of sight and touch. With his innovative technique, which combines elements of bas-relief and high color, Mueller dedicates his works equally to those with limited vision as well as those with full sight. The latter enjoy the high aesthetic of colors and shapes, the former – due to the described style – are able to “see” interesting forms and their enclosed message through touch with their hands.

“I titled my show, ‘Even Hands Can See’ because I noticed that the blind or visually impaired experience art in a different way than the sighted,” said Mueller.  “Galleries and museums typically have ‘no touch’ policies’, which is understandable to preserve historic art for future generations. But as an artist, I wanted to create a method for the sighted as well as those with limited vision to experience the visual arts. My paintings are representative for all people, not based solely on an individual’s ability to interpret with their eyes.”

FEI provides monthly meeting space to the Treasure Coast Resource Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired, free of charge, for those individuals who live in Indian River County who are challenged with limited vision due to genetic incidence or eye disease. In these meetings participants have the opportunity to discuss relevant topics and receive referrals to services that meet their individual needs as well as providing an engaging social outlet.

Sue West, Executive Director for the Resource Center, suggested that Mueller share his work during one of their monthly meetings. The artist was happy to comply, and brought samples for the participants to ‘see’ and touch.  Mueller has had recent successful showings of his barrier free art in Germany and in Stuart, FL.

The public is invited to come and experience this unique opportunity at Florida Eye Institute during regular office hours the week of February 21-25, and during a special showing from 2 to 6 pm  on Saturday, February 26 in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the opening of Royal Palm Pointe by the City of Vero Beach.

Florida Eye Institute is located at 2750 Indian River Blvd. at the corner of Royal Palm Pointe in Vero Beach.
