Indian River County jail inmate dies at hospital due to medical complications

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY–A long-time inmate at the Indian River County jail died Tuesday due to pre-existing medical complications, a statement released from the Sheriff’s Office said.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, inmate Gary Lorino died at Indian River Medical Center, the release stated.

He had been in custody awaiting trial since Aug. 3, 2009, on charges of  Failing to Register as a Sexual Offender, Failing to Report Changes in Residence to Law Enforcement, Possession of Cocaine and Driving on a Suspended License.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Lorino was most recently admitted to the Indian River Medical Center on Dec. 30, 2010, for treatment of congestive heart problems and deteriorating organ function.

Since his incarceration, he suffered from an array of chronic, pre-existing medical issues that led to his regular confinement and treatment in the medical unit of the jail and admittance to the hospital for treatment on multiple occasions, according to the release.
