INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at FAU Ocean Science Lecture Series provides a forum for the community at large to learn about Harbor Branch’s most recent discoveries directly from the scientists who made them. Lectures are held in the auditorium of the Johnson Education Center on the Harbor Branch campus, 5600 U.S. 1 North, Fort Pierce. Presentations are at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., followed by a meet-the-speaker reception. There is no charge to attend. Wednesday, January 12: Fraser Dalgleish presents Sensing the Future for Ocean Exploration: The Latest in Advanced Optical Sensors and Persistent Presence Platforms.
This talk will describe recent optical sensor and robotic vehicle innovations currently in use or under development by Harbor Branch’s Ocean Visibility and Optics Laboratory. Learn how this research is helping to overcome the major economic and technological barriers that have restricted our ability to extensively explore the world’s vast oceans.
Wednesday, January 19: Jim Masterson presents Friends in Low Places: Galapagos 2010 Adventure with the Friends of Harbor Branch.
Harbor Branch scientist and educator Dr. Jim Masterson traveled to Galapagos in October 2010 with a group of intrepid Friends of Harbor Branch. He will recount the group’s adventures and present a concise natural history of this unique UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wednesday, January 26: John Scarpa & Shirley Pomponi present From the Indian River Lagoon to the Red Sea.
Harbor Branch and the Egyptian National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries have embarked upon a collaborative program in aquaculture, coral reef biodiversity, and marine biotechnology. Learn how personal and professional activities of HBOI-FAU scientists led to this collaborative program and what the future holds for HBOI-Egypt marine science.
