2 cockatiels remain of 48 birds surrendered to Humane Society

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Forty-six birds brought to The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County have something great to chirp about after being adopted over the past week.

“We have only two cockatiels remaining who are looking for homes,” said Ilka Daniel, the shelter’s Director of Animal Protective Services. “We’re truly grateful to the media for getting the word out about these birds, and to our community for coming to their rescue.”

Forty-eight birds including parakeets, cockatiels a canary and a parrot were brought to the shelter in early December by an Indian River County breeder who was unable to care for them.

The Humane Society and the Indian River Department of Animal Control worked cooperatively to convince the breeder to surrender the birds.

Each bird received a health assessment at the Humane Society prior to being placed for adoption.
