Rev. Brendan Griswold of Vero Beach and South Dartmouth, Mass., died Dec. 6, 2010.
He graduated from the Haverford School in Haverford, Pa., and from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif.
His career was spent in teaching and in the Priesthood of the Episcopal Church.
He graduated from the Episcopal Berkeley Divinity School at Yale and was ordained in 1950.
For the next ten years he helped start new parishes in Stamford, Conn., and San Antonio, Texas.
He returned to the East to become the Chaplain and assistant headmaster of St. Margaret’s School in Waterbury, Conn.
Later he became the assistant headmaster of the Cambridge School in Weston, Mass.
It was there that his first wife Kathryn Elliott died.
In 1974, he married Adelaide Cole Heyniger of Lawrenceville, N.J.
They moved to Buffalo, N.Y., where he became a Canon at St. Paul’s Cathedral, a position he held until his retirement in 1982.
For twenty years he was active in the life of the city.
He served on the boards of Planned Parenthood, the Albright-Knox Gallery, Child and Family Services, and the Saturn Club.
He was an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau and a hospital volunteer and a member of Hospice.
An avid sailor, he summered in South Dartmouth where he participated in the services of St. Aidan’s Chapel and was active in its organization.
In 1994 the Griswold’s moved to Vero Beach, where he did pro-bono service assisting in the services of St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church.
He is survived by two children; Geoffrey Elliott Griswold who is a computer consultant and Dr. Kim Griswold who is a family physician in Buffalo, N.Y., and a step-daughter, Mrs. Chad Morse, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. There are six grand- children and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 12, at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church with the Rev. Michael Goldberg officiating.
