Russell “Russ” James Housman, 83, Vero Beach

Russell “Russ” James Housman, 83, died Nov. 11, 2010, in Westbury, N.Y.

He was born in Queens and lived in Grand Harbor in Vero Beach for 10 years, coming from Garden City, N.Y. He attended Mount Hermon Preparatory School in Massachusetts and Colgate University.

He served in the Army at the end of World War II.

He worked in financial advertising at the New York Herald Tribune and then at D.F. King & Co.

In 1980, he and two other executives owned and operated Kissel-Blake in New York and turned it into a powerful innovator on Wall Street during the turbulent takeover era of Mike Milken, T. Boone Pickens and Carl Icahn.

He retired in 1991.

He was a long-time member of the Cherry Valley Club in Garden City and Grand Harbor. In Vero Beach, he volunteered at a local soup kitchen and helped underprivileged children to read.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” Riley, of Peachtree City, Ga; sons, James “Jim” Housman, of Great Falls, Va., Douglas “Doug” Housman, of South Salem, N.Y., and Russell “Russ” Housman, of Franklin Square, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Joyce Adams Housman.

Visitation will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Fairchild & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, followed by a memorial service from 4:30 to 5 p.m.
