3 arrested after month-long drug investigation netting drugs, weapons

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that its MACE and SWAT units arrested three men after a month-long drug investigation.

That investigation netted nearly $1,700 in cash, cocaine, marijuana and weapons, among other items. Authorities arrested Alan Johnson, 29, of the 4400 block 33rd Avenue; Alonzo Smothers, 26, of the 1200 block of 29th Street; and Mark Hewitt, 48, of the 3800 block of 44th Place.

Along with the cash and drugs, investigators confiscated an SKS 7.62 assault rifle, a Glock 21 .45 caliber, a large assortment of ammunition, a bullet proof vest, and two TV’s that were being used for surveillance around the residences during the criminal activity, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The bust occurred on Thursday, around 12:30 p.m. and involved both the Multi Agency Criminal Enforcement Unit and SWAT, due to the investigation yielding information about weapons being involved.

“Drugs are a national issue, however our M.A.C.E. Unit continues to be diligent in their quest to get drugs off the streets of Indian River County,” said Sheriff Deryl Loar.

In light of the recent shootings in both Indian River and St. Lucie County all weapons will be checked by the Regional Crime Lab to determine if the rounds matched any recovered from the shootings, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Johnson faces three charges of sale/delivery of marijuana and cocaine within 1000′ of a daycare facility. He is being held at the county jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Smothers, who was released from the jail on $500 bond, faces a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession.
