Carolyn Rice, 78, Vero Beach

Carolyn Rice, 78, died Nov. 15, 2010, at Royal Palm Convalescent Center in Vero Beach.

She was born in Birmingham, Ala., and lived in Vero Beach for 16 years. Before retirement, she worked for National and PanAm airlines for 33 years.

Survivors include her daughters, Adrienne Rice and Susan McElvain, both of Miramar; sister, Judy Resta of Fayetteville, Ga.; brother, Jimmy Hicks of Centreville, Ala.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Vero Beach, 6230 77th St., Vero Beach, FL 32967.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 18 at Aycock Funeral Home in Fort Pierce, followed by burial at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Fort Pierce.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
