SEBASTIAN — Sebastian residents looking to clear out the old in time for the new can take their aging electronics to Sebastian City Hall on Saturday to recycle them.
The annual recycling event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to all Indian River County residents. It is sponsored by the Indian River County Solid Waste Disposal District and Keep Indian River Beautiful.
“This event provides a great opportunity to bring outdated computers, televisions, and consumer
electronics and to keep electronics waste and its hazardous components out of our landfill,” said Solid Waste Director Himanshu Mehta in a letter to the City of Sebastian.
Last year’s event in Sebastian netted more than 25 tons – 51,000 pounds – of electronics, according to Mehta. If not for the recycling, those items could have ended up in the county landfill.
The collected electronics will be sent to AERC Recycling Solutions in Melbourne, where the items will be disassemble and recover components for resale. Metal, glass and plastics within the collected electronics will also be stripped for recycling.
AERC will provide a certification of recycling for the event and have a strict policy to remove and erase
all computer files, software, or other information contained on electronics, according to Mehta.
Residents who need new or replacement recycling bins can pick them up at the recycling event on Saturday.
Along with an opportunity to get rid of unwanted electronics and pick up new recycling bins, there will be a drawing for a refurbished laptop, courtesy of AERC Recycling Solutions, and other give-aways throughout the day.
The funding for this event is provided by the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners.
For those who can’t participate in the Nov. 13 recycling event at Sebastian City Hall, they can take their old electronics to one of the county’s five Customer Convenience Centers or the Main Landfill.
For more information about this event, call the Main Landfill at (772) 770-5112.
