With a reputation for sunny days and laid back locals, San Diego also offers plenty in the way of culture and activity. Historic sites like Mission San Diego de Alcala and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park offer a glimpse into the city’s Spanish past. Los Angeles: In addition its favorable climate, Los Angeles is one of the greatest cultural centers in the world. Further afield: Palm Springs, about a two hour drive east of Los Angeles, offers 354 days of sunshine a year and is a haven for golfers or those who just want to soak by the pool. If you’re looking to explore the mountainous portions of southern California, stop in the quiet mountain town of Julian to check out its quaint shops and restaurants.

Cruises: San Diego and Los Angeles are both major departure points for large cruise lines. Shorter trips to the Baja Peninsula or Santa Catalina Island provide sea adventure opportunities that can easily fit into a week’s vacation in southern California.
