Exchangites hook up with Youth Guidance kids

Members of the Exchange Club of Indian River traveled to LaPorte Farms in Sebastian on Saturday night, October 23 to enjoy their National Day of Service with the children of Youth Guidance. Together they enjoyed catching fish, riding the new mechanical bull named Bodacious, and watching the exotic birds, goats, donkeys, swans, ducks, turkeys, llamas, and zebra. The beautiful moonlight evening was topped off by hayrides and a picnic supper, followed by marshmallows and ‘smores around the campfire.

Eco-goats not ‘cost effective’ for clearing exotic vegetation

Indian River County's year-long pilot project using a herd of foraging goats to devour invasive plants at two county conservation tracts has ended with only mixed success. The animals, aided by their goatherd Steven Slatem, did a number on stands of Brazilian pepper and other exotic plants and grasses on a five-acre former citrus grove near CR 510 and on 26 acres of Cypress Bend Preserve north of Sebastian, according to Beth Powell, the county's conservation lands manager. But Powell said the goats weren't exactly cost effective. Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th.
