Adult costumes one of many ways to spice up the holidays

The holidays are the time to spread cheer, but you’re probably not alone if you’re looking for ways to spice up your usual routine and wondering how to make your party stand out. One easy way to make your holiday gathering unique is to make it a costume party.

Since clever costumes make Halloween such a great occasion, there’s no reason to reserve dressing up for one day a year. Christmas offers a lot options for costumes, from traditional icons like Santa Claus and his reindeer to popular holiday movie characters like Scrooge or Ralphie from “A Christmas Story.”

You don’t have to reserve dressing up just for parties. Make your Christmas extra festive by outfitting your family in holiday-themed costumes for the annual family Christmas cards. Use your imagination to come up with a theme that’s sure to catch the attention of your recipients.

While a costume party is sure to do the trick, here are some other ways to mix things up around the holidays:

* Make it a singles event. The holidays often mean reuniting with family, but there’s no reason singles shouldn’t also take the chance to get to know some new people. Encourage sexy costumes to make sure your event isn’t too stuffy – perhaps even offer a prize for the best one. Salacious costumes have become commonplace on Halloween, and costume retailers like Sexy Costume Discounters have jumped on the trend by offering countless variations on sexy Christmas costumes that promise to catch the attention of the opposite sex.

* Have some fun with food. While everyone looks forward to eating during the holidays, the same samplings can get old. Add a little spice (literally) to your party by offering ethnic foods that are enjoyed by other cultures during the holidays. Or challenge your guests to come up with the best wine and cheese parings.

* Have a theme for gift exchanges. Since all your guests will be buying gifts for many other people this season, consider designating one item for exchange to make it easier on them. Ornament exchanges allow for creativity and provide a reminder of your party for years to come. You could also ask each guest to bake a batch of cookies or buy a 12-pack of a craft beer to ensure food and beverage variety at your event.
