VERO BEACH — A newly formed, community-wide, non-denominational Singing Meditation group has begun meeting at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach. The group is free and open to the public, and the next gathering will be on Monday, November 15. UUFVB director of music Ann Hossler will lead the group. Singers and non-singers alike are welcome. Singing Meditation is an interfaith spiritual practice, both ancient and modern, that combines singing of many types with group observation of silence. Simple songs will be taught and sung. Silence will fill the space between the songs. This is not a rehearsal for something else. This is not a performance. This is simply singing.
The singing part of Singing Meditation includes a variety of vocalizations: toning, chanting, and singing in rounds, singing in harmony and mantras. The repertoire is interfaith: Jewish, Christian, Sufi, earth-based, Hindu, Buddhist and others.
“Music is a great gift that the Divine,” Hossler believes, “has given us to open us up to the Beyond-ness of Life. For me, that is the critical difference between sacred and secular music. To perform secular music is to be a performer; to perform sacred music is to provide a vessel for the Holy to enter into the world.”
Participants are asked to enter through Door D on the 27th Avenue side of the UU Fellowship building, located on the southeast corner of 27th Avenue and 16th Street.
