DELAND – St. Edward’s Pirates traveled to Lighthouse Christian Friday night, seeking their first 8-0 start since 1991.
Coming off a 42-12 win over Bishop McLaughlin, St. Edward’s looked to continue its high scoring offense and wasn’t disappointed with a 35-6 win over Lighthouse Christian. With leading rusher Cortez Brown sidelined with an injury, J.D. McGee would have to shoulder most of the carries.
Just 4 minutes into the game McGee got the scoring started when he scored on a blocked punt returned. The first quarter ended St. Edward’s 7, Lighthouse Christian Academy 0.
On the final play of the first quarter, St. Edward’s Kollin Kite intercepted the Lighthouse Christian quarterback Ter’ra Potter.
Seconds into the second quarter, J.D. McGee scored again with a 60-yard touchdown run. On the Pirates next offensive possession, J.D. McGee tore off a 49-yard touchdown run.
Three minutes later, St. Edward’s David Cicco had a 6-yard touchdown run. With just 1:37 left in first half, St. Edward’s Anderson Proctor had a 4-yard touchdown run.
The first half ended, St. Edward’s 35, Lighthouse Christian 0.
The second half was quiet, with neither team putting together any scoring drives. The only score of the second half was by Lighthouse Christian when Terron Washington found the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown run with 11:33 left in the final quarter.
St. Edward’s improves to 8-0.
They clinched the Sunshine State Athletic Conference South Division title last week.
St. Edward’s has a bye next week before facing Faith Baptist Christian in conference play.
