VERO BEACH — The College Board has recognized 56 Saint Edward’s students and recent graduates for their distinguished academic achievement in college-level Advanced Placement (AP) course-work. The AP Scholar Awards recognize high school students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency on college-level work through achievement in Advanced Placement coursework and exams. Four students from the class of 2010 were awarded the highest designation of National AP Scholar. Will Peckham and Jarred Spear of Vero Beach and Morgan Wild and Eric Willett of Fort Pierce attained the rank of National AP Scholar which is granted to students who receive an average score of 4 or higher (on a 1-5 scale) on all AP exams taken and score 4 or higher on at least 8 AP exams.
The Saint Edward’s AP National Scholars Peckham, Spear, Wild and Willett took a combined total of 44 AP exams during their time at Saint Edward’s, averaging 11 AP exams each. Their average overall AP score was 4.685 out of a possible 5 points. Will Peckham is currently enrolled at Middlebury College, Jarred Spear at the University of Pennsylvania, Morgan Wild at the University of Miami and Eric Willet at Yale University.
The College Board designated an additional 21 Saint Edward’s students as AP Scholars with Distinction. Scholars so designated must receive an average score of at least 3.50 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. This group of students completed 135 AP exams, averaging more than 6 exams each and scoring a combined average of 4.04 on tests. Four students from the class of 2010: Jack Giampolo, James Kappel, Gracie Loesser and Louis Szapary completed 8 or more AP courses and exams before graduation. Seven students are Seniors in the class of 2011 and Sasha Benincasa, now a Junior, completed 5 AP courses in his Freshman and Sophomore years.
Thirteen additional Saint Edward’s students were recognized by the College Board as AP Scholars with Honor. This recognition is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. This group took a combined total of 53 exams and has scored a combined average of 3.57 on the exams. Five of these students are graduates of the Class of 2010 and eight are currently Seniors at Saint Edward’s.
The last group honored by the College Board were granted the distinction of being named AP Scholars. Sixteen additional Saint Edward’s students were so named for receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. These students have taken a combined total of 52 AP exams and have scored a combined average of 3.6 on these tests. Ten of these Scholars were graduates of the class of 2010 and six are currently Seniors.
The Advanced Placement Scholar Awards recognize high school students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. Students at Saint Edward’s may begin taking AP level course work in their Freshman year. In 2010, 130 Saint Edward’s students were enrolled in 18 AP courses and a total of 271 exams were taken. The average score achieved by these students was 3.4.
The Advanced Studies Program at Saint Edward’s offers a rigorous program for Seniors who wish to add independent research to an already challenging program of honors and AP courses. Students are accepted at the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country and many receive college credit for having completed AP level courses while at Saint Edward’s School.
