Doris L. Hopkins, 84, Vero Beach

Doris L. Hopkins, 84, died Oct. 13, 2010, at Consulate Health Care of Vero Beach.

She was born in Vero Beach and lived here for five years coming from Key West. Survivors include her son, James Hopkins, of Key West; daughter, Barbara Weaver, of Live Oak; and nine grandchildren.

Hopkins was preceded in death by her husband, James.

Visitation will be from 4-5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Castillo- Thurston’s Key West Mortuary. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Key West Cemetery, Key West.

Arrangements are under the direction of Castillo-Thurston’s Key West Mortuary, Key West.

Family, friends, marines honor ‘protector, hometown hero’

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Frank Strahorn was already considered a hero by his family, friends and marine brothers and sisters because of his military service around the world. Then, on June 19, the 34-year-old became a "hometown hero" after he was fatally shot while helping others escape a gunman carrying an AK-47 assault rifle at a Sebastian pizzeria.
