Hugh M. Pender Jr., 79, Vero Beach

Hugh M. Pender Jr., 79, died Sept. 27, 2010, at Consulate Health Care.

He was born in Greenwich, Conn., and lived in Vero Beach for 18 years, coming from Somers, N.Y. He was a veteran of the Air National Guard, serving during the Korean War.

Before retirement, he was a schoolteacher. He was a member of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; sons, Hugh Martin Pender III, of Daytona Beach and Edward Pender, of Somers; daughter, April Baker, of Vero Beach; sister, Patricia Gedney, of Madison, Conn.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson/Alzheimer Association of Vero Beach, 2300 5th Ave., Suite 150 Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 30 at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
