Genealogists save Saturday hours

VERO BEACH — With the onset of October, the Indian River County Library is in its new fiscal year, dealing with very large budget cuts made by the County Commission.  Staff has been cut, expenses pared to the bone and library hours sliced.  One of those cuts was to eliminate Saturday hours in the upstairs Genealogy Department of the main library in downtown Vero Beach.

To help genealogy researchers, seven members of the Indian River Genealogical Society (IRGS) have volunteered to staff the Genealogy Department and open it for use on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning October 2.   There will be no paid staff on duty in that department on Saturdays; only IRGS volunteers will be available to assist researchers with their genealogy.  The Genealogy Department will continue to be open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Volunteer staffers are Marsha Braun, JoAnn Buckner, Alice and Dave Gorman, Pete Kersey and Sharon Robertson.  Diane MacGowan will be on standby duty in case one of the others cannot make a scheduled shift.
