Youth Transition Center Wins Architectural Award

VERO BEACH —  Children’s Home Society (CHS) Treasure Coast Division Youth Transition Center was awarded with the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce “New Commercial Non-Profit Building” Award at the 2010 Industry Appreciation Award luncheon on September 16. Donadio and Associates, Bill Bryant & Associates, and Kimley-Horn were acknowledged for their roles as architect, general contractor and environmental engineering, respectively.

Located on the Vero Beach Campus, the YTC provides a residential facility for young adults enrolled in the Transitional Living Program, ages 18-23, who are transitioning into adulthood out of the foster care system.

“This center was built as a result of a $5 million capital campaign, funded through grants and private donations, to provide a nurturing independent living facility for youth in our community, that through no fault of their own were in the foster care system as a result of abuse, neglect and abandonment,” explained Jan Huffert, Executive Director of CHS Treasure Coast Division.  “The YTC will have a transformational impact on our community for generations to come by providing access to education, employment and counseling that will break the cycle of abuse that these young adults have experienced in their lives.”

The Children’s Home Society Treasure Coast Division serves more than 9,000 children and their families each year in Okeechobee, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties.  CHS is not a governmental agency and must rely on the support of individuals, civic groups, foundations and businesses for the funds to give children and young adults the opportunity to be safe, healthy and prepared for life.
