Indian River County launches new emergency alert system

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Indian River County Emergency Management has launched a a new community information service designed for important and timely information via e-mail, text messages and the Web.

Such information will include severe weather alerts and community safety information. “It is vitally important that the residents of Indian River County receive relevant and timely communications regarding emergency events,” said John King, Indian River County Emergency Services Director. “I believe this new service will allow us to keep the citizens of Indian River County informed in the most convenient, reliable way possible.”

The emergency alert service, created by Nixle LLC, delivers geographically targeted neighborhood-level public safety and community event notifications at no cost to subscribers.

However, those who sign up for text alerts might have fees assessed by their cell provider.

The messages can be sent specifically to residents registered within a quarter-mile radius or a much broader area, giving authorities the opportunity to send neighborhood targeted or countywide public information relevant to those residents.

Residents choose the way in which alerts are received.

This community information service will replace the e-mail weather alert system currently being used by Indian River County subscribers. The service is reliable and free to use and residents of Indian River County can immediately begin receiving pertinent information via text message, email, and web by registering at www.nixle.com.

“As new communication forms continue to evolve it is the goal of Indian River County to keep its residents and visitors informed using the latest technology available.” said King.
