FELLSMERE — A Fellsmere man has been taken to an area hospital with severe injuries following a 3-dog attack on North Cypress Street early Wednesday morning
According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Gileerto Gomez was standing in the area of 31 N. Cypress around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday when three dogs attacked him. One dog was identified as a pit bull.
A deputy on the scene reported seeing the pit bull hanging from Gomez’s left arm while the other two dogs stood nearby. Why the dogs attacked remains under investigation.
The dogs have since been taken into Animal Control’s custody and the owner has been notified of the attack, according to officials.
When the deputy approached Gomez, the two dogs approached him, forcing the deputy to fire his gun several times to ward them off. A couple shots struck one dog in the jaw and in the neck.
The dog has been treated for the gunshot wounds.
Indian River County Fire Rescue first took Gomez to Sebastian River Medical Center to be treated, but officials there felt his wounds were serious enough to warrant being transferred to Holmes Regional.
