INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County and the Vero Beach Police Department are asking for the public’s help leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for two starving dogs.
“The Humane Society and the Police Department are their advocates,” Director of Animal Protective Services Ilka Daniel said. “Both of our organizations are pleading with the community to help us find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
The dogs, a female hound mix and a male Catahoula leopard dog mix, both approximately two years old, were rescued by Vero Beach Animal Control Officer Bruce Dangerfield Thursday morning.
Authorities were alerted to the dogs by good Samaritans Kristen and Kurt Runge who found the dogs in the southern part of the county.
The dogs received immediate veterinary attention and are being cared for by Humane Society staff.
“Treating animals like this is inexcusable,” says HSVB & IRC Executive Director Chalmers Morse. “Whoever did this should be held accountable for their actions.”
If you have information about this case, please call the Humane Society at (772) 388-3331 ext. 28 or the Vero Beach Police Department at (772) 978-4600.
The Humane Society is also requesting donations to help provide for the medical care of both dogs. If you’d like to make a donation, please call the shelter at (772) 388-3331 ext. 26.
