Power outage doesn’t stop voting at beachside polling place

VERO BEACH — Power was out for City of Vero Beach Electric customers along A-1-A for about an hour this afternoon, including the power to Christ by the Sea Methodist Church, the polling place for Precincts 508, 509 and 510.

Fortunately, according to elections officials, voting went on despite the darkness and lack of juice.

“I have not spoken to any of the poll workers over there, but they had a contingency plan and it was only out for an hour,” said Assistant Supervisor of Elections Leslie Swan. “They kept voting.”

Swan said that poll workers held the ballots and then ran them through the scanning machine after the power came back on.

“There is no possibility of losing data,” Swan said.

Swan said she was not aware of any other polling places being affected by lost power today.

When asked about turnout countywide, Swan said the latest figures she had were as of about 3:30 p.m. when roughly 7,000 people had cast ballots.

Polls are open until 7 p.m. There are two County Commission seats in the Republican Primary and three School Board seats up for grabs in the primary of that non-partisan race. Candidates for two Florida House seats, Governor, state Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer, Commissioner of Agriculture, U.S. Senate and several judicial seats are also on the ballot.
