René Parra, 86, Vero Beach

Renè Parra, 86, died Aug. 19, 2010. He was living over the past three years in Vero Beach with his daughter Elena and her husband, Enrique Padilla.

He was born in Santiago, Chile, on Oct. 27, 1924. He retired as a Senior CPA for the Chilean Telephone Company after 35 years. He loved the outdoors, ocean, boating and enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, dad, granddad and great granddaddy. His warm beautiful smile and loving ways will be truly missed.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mafalda Bravo de Parra, of Vero Beach; sons, Antonio (Silvia) Parra of Santiago, Cristian (Rosa) Parra, of Vero Beach; daughters, Elena (Enrique), Marcela Huling, Gabriela (Paul) Collins, all of Vero Beach, Carolina (Bob) Jara, of Greer, S.C.; 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be hosting a private memorial service to celebrate Renè’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VNA of Indian River County, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960. Arrangements are under the direction of Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
