The Indian River County Board of Commissioners is made up of five members who serve 4-year terms. The commission currently is made up of Chairman Peter O’Bryan, Joe Flescher, Wesley Davis, Bob Solari and Gary Wheeler.

Both O’Bryan and Flescher are up for re-election in the Aug. 24 primary election. They both face fellow Republicans in the primary. The winners in the Republican primary will face challengers in the Nov. 2 general election.

Commissioners are elected countywide to individual districts.

Commission candidates make final pitch for votes before Primary

Rosario, Gibbs headed to runoff; Flescher, Loar win commission seats

School Board Incumbent Jacqueline Rosario and political newcomer Cynthia Gibbs will head to a runoff for the District 2 seat in November during the general election. Rosario, who garnered more than 17,000 votes, was the top-vote getter in the Primary Election for her race with a 46.82 percentage, the supervisor of elections website showed. Gibbs, the runner-up, had more than 9,000 votes with a 26.38 percentage. School board races are nonpartisan. School board member candidates must win at least 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff before the general election. Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association recently released its monthly report for the beaches at Jaycee Park, Humiston Park and South Beach Park. Lifeguards said about 54,105 beachgoers flocked to the shore in January. The highest beach-attendance record of 65,700 was set in 2019 for Vero Beach, lifeguards said. Laura Zorc’s loss in school board race mirrors husband’s defeat in commission contest

Indian River County School Board Chairwoman Laura Zorc lost her bid for a second term in the Aug. 18 elections by the same margin her husband Tim lost his race for a third term as a county commissioner. Retired school administrator Peggy Jones received 23,086 votes, or 60.37 percent, in the non-partisan School Board election in District 3, according to the Supervisor of Elections web site. Laura Zorc, who was serving her second year as chairwoman, received 15,153 votes, or 39.63 percent, records show. In Commission District 3, Tim Zorc fared a fraction better than his wife with 15,378 votes, or 39.85 percent, against retired Fire Rescue Capt.
