VERO BEACH — The Samaritan Center, a long term facility for homeless families, in Indian River County, is gearing up this summer for its Soup Bowl with a Samaritan Center Soup Bowl Workshop at the Vero Beach Museum of Art beginning Thursday, Aug. 19. The public is invited to watch the wheel throwing this coming weekend Saturday, Aug. 21 and Sunday, Aug. 22 during museum hours.
A collaboration of master ceramics artisans will produce wheel thrown stoneware bowls and soup tureens at the workshop. These hand made bowls are sold for $10 during the Nov. 4 Soup Bowl, and raffle tickets will be sold for the soup tureens at more than 30 public locations. ‘The bowls fly out the door at our public sites’ said Shotsi Cain Lajoie. co-chair of this years event. “We decided to increase our goal to 1,000 bowls this year. The ceramics facility at the Vero Beach Museum is state of the art and can accommodate our needs. It has a very large gas kiln. We are very grateful for this continuing partnership.”
The artists have a healthy competitive spirit and, to add a bit of fun, Chris Pierce of the Art Club has received donations of gift certificates for the top producers this year.
The Soup Bowl will be held, Thursday, November 4 throughout Indian River County. The soup, donated by over 60 restaurants, is served at 13 places of worship. Soup is also supplied by businesses and served to the public at other locations, and private gatherings are held at homes, businesses and clubs.
