How to go on a ‘low-car’ diet

Automobiles are as American as baseball and apple pie. Admit it, you can’t remember the last time you walked or biked to get somewhere. Your car is just too convenient a mode of transportation, but it may be time to rethink your ways.

1. Consider skipping the gym – Why drive to your local gym when you can just as easily go for a run outside? Instead of hitting the treadmills after work, consider exercising outdoors and enjoying the warm summer air. Make sure you’re safe on the road by running against the direction of traffic, wearing bright and reflective clothing and waiting at intersections for a break in traffic.

This way, you only have to drive your car to one location and you’ll get a nice walk in as well. 4. Get your friends involved – The best way to maintain a low-car/car-free diet is to get your friends involved. Create a carpool and make sure everyone practices safe driving tips like buckling up, driving the speed limit, and not using technology while driving.

5. Take public transportation – Public transportation is the most convenient and probably the cheapest way to get around, especially if you live in a large metropolitan city.

Shrinking your carbon footprint and saving money on gas aren’t the only benefits a low-car diet will offer.
