Oslo trash center cleared for new facility

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The Oslo Customer Convenience Center has been approved for relocation on First Place, south of Vero Beach.

Commissioners approved a special use exemption that will allow the 20-year-old facility to be rebuilt on seven acres to the west of where it currently stands. The new $2 million facility will be farther away from two nearby neighborhoods and better buffered to decrease its impact on the communities, according to county officials.

Commissioner Bob Solari told his fellow board members that his wife would be happy with the new center because she uses it all the time.

“She’ll be pleased as punch,” he said.

County Administrator Joe Baird told commissioners that the funds for the new facility would be coming out of the Solid Waste Disposal District and the work is fully funded.

The Oslo Customer Convenience Center will be modeled after the recently re-opened Fellsmere center, which “looks good” and “really functions well,” Community Development Director Bob Keating said.

The new facility is expected to have better traffic flow, allowing those who are dropping off yard waste to bypass those dumping trash so as to cut down on traffic backups.

County officials expect to get construction started on the replacement facility before the end of the year.

The current center will remain open and operational while construction is going on next door. Once the new center opens, the county will demolish the old and restore the property to a grassed area, Keating said.

The Oslo Customer Convenience Center is located at 950 First Place, Vero Beach, and is one of five such facilities the county operates.

The others include:

Gifford: 4901 41st St.

Winter Beach: 3955 65th St.

Roseland: 7860 130th St.

Fellsmere: 12510 County Road 512

The centers are open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily except for Wednesdays and Thursdays. They are also closed on certain holidays, including Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving Day.

The county landfill is located at 1325 74th Ave. SW and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for the same holidays.
