Considering a trip to Mexico for your summer vacation? If so, dare to be different and visit a city off the beaten path. Instead of making your way to busy Mexico City or Puerto Vallarta, how about looking into Mazatlan vacations instead?
Mazatlan is a former spring break spot along Mexico’s Pacific coastline that now attracts a lot of families and retirees. Those who’ve spent time there call the city a good choice for a quick getaway. There’s plenty to see and do, and it’s a lot less expensive than Puerto Vallarta. Cheap hotels are plentiful, even along the wide, golden beaches; but there’s more to do than just partake in water sports.
In addition to seaside parks to explore and expansive beaches to visit, there are also a number of historical sites worth checking out. Those who are into archaeology will appreciate the pyramids and petroglyphs found at Piedras Labradas (Carved Rocks), about 40 miles north of the city. There are also old mines to explore and museums where local artifacts from days gone by are on display.
If you’ll be traveling with young children, they are sure to enjoy Acuario Mazatlan, an aquarium that features more than 50 tanks filled with a variety of sea life — multi-colored salt- and freshwater fish, sea horses and even sharks. Animal shows featuring kissing sea lions and skating macaws are put on three times daily.
There may be more to do than partake in water sports, but they should definitely be on your activity list, too. Parasailing is one of the most popular pastimes that Mazatlan vacations are known for worldwide. In fact, it’s said to be difficult to spend a day at the beach and not get approached by someone who wants to take you on a parasailing ride.
Avid divers and people who enjoy snorkeling will also have a great time here. Lobsters, grouper, coral and tropical fish are among the creatures that are plentiful here. So are game fish, which means there are wonderful opportunities for deep sea fishing all year round.
