Driving Miss Daisy drives fundraiser for two organizations

VERO BEACH — The play “Driving Miss Daisy” held on two evenings this past February was a joint fundraiser for Haiti Partners and the Vero Beach Theatre Guild, and raised $7,060 for each organization.

The play was directed by Don Daniels and featured performers Pat Kroger, Jim Daly and Gary Sayles.  Each evening also included a cocktail reception and champagne reception, both accompanied by talented classical guitarist Richard Long.

Haiti Partners announced that it had started rebuilding its first new school with rooms to teach 125 students in the morning and an additional 125 students in the afternoon.  The school has received donated laptops and generators and will have solar internet service.  The facility will also be used as a shelter at night for parents and children.  Information about Haiti Partners can be found at its website, www.HaitiPartners.org.

The 2010-11 season for the Vero Beach Theatre Guild includes:  Sept. 16-26 – The Unexpected Guest, an Agatha Christie mystery; Nov. 11-28 – Fiddler on the Roof, with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, based on the book by Joseph Stein; Jan. 13-23 – On Golden Pond, a drama by Ernest Thompson; March 10-27 – Annie, with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin, based on the book by Thomas Meehan; and May 12-22 – Leading Ladies, a comedy by Ken Ludwig.

Man critical after being struck by vehicle Friday in Sebastian

SEBASTIAN — A 70-year-old Brevard County man was critically injured after being struck by a pickup truck while walking across U.S. 1 last week, fire rescue crews and sheriff's officials said. Several agencies stop human smuggling attempt at Sebastian Inlet

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A group of Haitian migrants - along with two Brevard County captains - were in federal custody after local, state and federal agencies blocked a human smuggling attempt Thursday night. The 24 undocumented Haitains, and boat captains, were detained at the Sebastian Inlet and turned over to the U.S. Coast Guard, said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff's Office. "The captains of the boat were trying to smuggle the Haitians into the country," Jaworski said. The incident led to a multi-agency response, including the Indian River County Sheriff's Office marine unit, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Coast Guard. Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association recently released its monthly report for the beaches at Jaycee Park, Humiston Park and South Beach Park. Lifeguards said about 54,105 beachgoers flocked to the shore in January. The highest beach-attendance record of 65,700 was set in 2019 for Vero Beach, lifeguards said.
