VERO BEACH — A man wielding a cell phone as though it were a gun was taken into protective custody Thursday afternoon in the area of Bobby’s Restaurant and Lounge on Ocean Drive in Vero Beach.
The Vero Beach Police Department responded to the area around 2 p.m. after someone reported a man was seen in the area carrying a gun. The gun, it turned out, was a cell phone, according to Lt. Kevin Martin. “It scared a lot of people,” the lieutenant said, but no one was injured during the incident.
A unit from Indian River Shores Public Safety and the Sheriff’s Office also responded on the scene to provide backup, along with a K-9 unit and the Sheriff’s helicopter.
The subject was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital under the Baker Act.
