Smart tips that can make moving easier

(ARA) In the hectic months and weeks leading up to a move, it’s easy to let some essential things fall through the cracks – things that could make the process of moving much easier. It’s a good idea to start a list of tasks that need to be completed and check them off as you go. Try keeping the list in a binder where you can also collect other information you’ll need leading up to, and on, moving day.

Here are a few key tasks you’ll need to do before you move.

* Lighten your load. There’s nothing like a move to convince you that it’s not only possible to downsize your possessions – it’s essential. Whether you’re hiring a moving company or enlisting the help (and vehicles) of friends, getting rid of items that you don’t really need saves time, money and stress.

Hold a yard sale before you start packing – just make sure you get the word out and make every effort to draw buyers in. Advertise in the local newspaper and on craigslist, but you should also have visual cues for potential customers who might be driving by. Buy re-usable lawn signs (which you can use again at future sales) that let people know you’re having a sale, and hang multicolored pennants to draw attention to your yard or garage.

* Make it official. One of the essential, but easy-to-forget steps in moving is making your new address official. Start by going to the nearest post office and registering your change of address. That way, all your mail will go to your new home and you won’t miss important items like bills or wedding invitations.

It’s important to make sure your change of address is recorded with the IRS and Social Security, in addition to making the change on your driver’s license. You should also order checks that reflect your new address – if they’re at odds with what’s on your driver’s license, they might not be accepted.

* Stock up. While you don’t want to move unnecessary things, there are a few items that you’ll want in abundance during moving time. First and foremost: packing materials. Make sure you’ve got plenty of sturdy boxes, good packing tape, a handful of black markers for labeling and bubble wrap or packing foam.

You’ll also want to keep a cleaning supply kit separate from your boxes of belongings. Stock it with all purpose cleaners and plenty of paper towels so that you can clean up as you leave your old place and enter the new.

* Spread the word. You want all your friends and family to have a record of your new home, so it’s a good idea to send moving announcements. Sites like Vistaprint.com make ordering items like announcements, address labels and checks easy – you can choose your design and order multiple items at once. If you want to celebrate your move, have a post-move-in party and hand out change-of-address cards to everyone who comes.
