Clyde W. Engle, 73, Roseland

Clyde W. Engle, 73, died April 10, 2010, at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

He was born in Dauphin, Pa., and lived in Roseland for 31 years, coming from Snyder County, Pa.

He was a retired truck driver and a volunteer with Roseland Fire Department. He was a veteran of the Marines.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Janet; son, Rex Engle of Vero Beach; daughter, Jacqueline “Jackie” Kroeger of Roseland; sisters, Frances Wetzel and Virginia Foltz, both of Carlisle, Pa., and Jeri Engle of Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society , 3375 20th St., Vero Beach, FL 32960, or the American Heart Association .

No services are planned at this time.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. Retired sheriff’s sergeant loses battle with cancer

A retired longtime sheriff's sergeant died of cancer over the weekend, officials said. James 'Jimmy' Stewart passed away overnight on Saturday in Tennessee, where he moved after retiring from the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. His age was not immediately available. It was unclear if any local memorials would be held for the retired law enforcement official. "He was a very well-respected sergeant within our agency," Flowers said. "He will certainly be missed." Stewart worked for the sheriff's office from 1986 to 2011, Flowers said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
