Donald Kaye Smith, 77, Vero Beach

Donald Kaye Smith, 77, died April 7, 2010 in Vero Beach. He was born in Berea, Ohio, July 11, 1932 to Harry Leonard and Goldie Estelle Smith. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1954 and his Juris Doctor from George Washington University in 1957. Bars included D.C. and U.S. Supreme Ct.

In 1955 he married Sarah Elizabeth Glascock and practiced law in Washington from 1958 to 1963, at which time he accepted a job with Government Employees Insurance Co. He worked there until 1992 when he retired as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Director.

He was also General Counsel of Government Employees Life Insurance Co., Criterion Insurance Co., Geico Investment Series Trust, Geico Municipal Securities Series Trust, Geico Tax Advantaged Series Trust, Geico Investment Series Co., Geico Indemnity Co., Criterion Casualty Co., Geico General Insurance Co.; Senior V.P. and General Counsel, GEICO Corp. Chairman of the Board, GEICO Properties, Inc. and GEICO Washington Properties, Inc. Director, Garden State Life Insurance Co. and Resolute Reinsurance Co. President, Old Farm Civic Assn., 1967; Trustee, Washington Opera, 1980-1992; Maryland Board of Trade; Greater Washington Board of Trade; Washington Trustee, Federal City Council. Member ABA, D.C. Bar Assoc., American Corporate Counsel Assn. (Treas., Director, President and Director, Washington Metropolitan Area Chapter). Phi Alpha Delta, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Rotary (President, North Bethesda, Md. 1977) and Vero Beach, Scottish Rite, Masons and he served on the boards of Asbury Solomons, and Asbury Services Inc. and was a director of Vero Beach Opera.

He belonged to Columbia Country Club, John’s Island Club, Quail Valley Golf Club and the Terrapin Club. He was instrumental in creating the first Endowment Fund for Middleham and St. Peters Parish, Calvert Co., Md. and the founding of the 1684 Society.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Sarabeth and two sons, Blair Webster (Stirling) and Gregory Mason (Beth) and 3 grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his son, Eric Vaughan.
