VERO BEACH — Patrick Smith’s classic novel of old Florida, A Land Remembered, comes under review on Thursday, April 22, by three local cattlemen. The event is the third and final in a series of “book socials” presented by the Indian River County Historical Society.
A Land Remembered tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons. Along the way are rustlers, Confederate deserters, mosquitoes, starvation, hurricanes, and freezes as the family carves a kingdom out of a swamp. The novel was winner of the Florida Historical Society Tebeau Prize as the Most Outstanding Florida Historical Novel.
Bringing the cattle rancher’s perspective to the book will be three members of local pioneer families – father and son Mark and Rob Tripson, and Will Barker. The event is sponsored by Waldo’s Garden, an all-occasion florist in Vero Beach. Cowboy-style refreshments will follow the presentation.
The event runs from 2 to 4 pm at the Hallstrom House, 1723 Old Dixie Highway in Vero Beach. Tickets are $15 for members, $20 for non-members and are available from the Society’s office in the Vero Train Station, 2336 14th Avenue.
