Edith Williams Denmead, 84, Vero Beach

Edith Williams Denmead, 84, died April 1, 2010, at her home.

She was born in Patchogue, N.Y., and lived in Vero Beach for 20 years, coming from Boca Raton.

She was a member of Christ Church of Vero Beach and Daughters of the King, Vero Beach. Survivors include her daughters, Fran Van Gelder of Vero Beach, Sheryle Williams of Port St. Lucie and Holly Astrid Word of Hollywood, Fla.; son, Edward Michael Hanson of Boynton Beach; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach. A guestbook may be signed at lowtherfuneralhome.com.

Man shot after charging at deputy with small sword

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 29-year-old man who was shot by a deputy after charging at the officer with a small sword, was hospitalized late Friday, officials said. The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. The deputy who fired the shot was not injured. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for police-involved shootings. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
