Eben Hoyt Cockley, 92, Vero Beach

Eben Hoyt Cockley, 92, died March 4, 2010, at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

He was born in Cleveland and lived in Vero Beach since 1982. He graduated from University School in 1936, Dartmouth College in 1940 and the University of Michigan Law School in 1942.

He served three years in the Army, first as a private mule driver in the artillery 10th Mountain Division, then as a 2nd lieutenant in a field artillery observation unit. He was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds he received at Remagen, Germany.

He was a partner at the Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue law firm from 1946 to 1982 and a member of Nisi Prius, a lawyers’ society in Cleveland.

He was the first president of The Moorings Club and president of the Moorings Property Owners Association in Vero Beach.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Vanneman Cockley; son, Dave Cockley; daughter, Kris Le Falchier; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
