Mobile unit to help North County job seekers on Fridays

SEBASTIAN — Workforce Solutions will be offering assistance to job seekers in Sebastian, Fellsmere and north county residents every Friday as the Workforce Solutions bus will be stationed in the parking lot just north of the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce at Main Street and US 1.

Beth Mitchell, the Chamber’s executive director, asked that the organization set aside a day each week for the bus to be in the north county to help those looking for work. She explained that people who are out of work might not be too eager to spend $2.70 a gallon for gas to drive down to the County Administration complex for help.

“They were very amenable,” Mitchell said of Workforce Solutions.

How many people might use the bus’s services is not known.

The location for the bus was selected due to its high visibility and because the parking lot is owned by the City of Sebastian.

Other locations considered included behind Sebastian City Hall off Main Street and the North County Library.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Mitchell said, adding that they might decide later to move the bus to the library to attract traffic from County Road 512 drivers and be more visible for Fellsmere residents.

The Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce and Workforce Solutions have had a long-standing relationship, according to Mitchell, due to their shared interests.

“We have a common cause in supporting business,” she said – including helping businesses find employees.

The Workforce Solutions bus is expected to be stationed in the Sebastian parking lot, 1305 US 1, every Friday starting March 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The bus will be pulled from the County Administration building, changing that location’s days and hours to Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

When in Vero Beach, the Workforce Solutions’ mobile unit is located between 25th Street and 18th Avenue adjacent to the County Administration building.

Workforce Solutions is a private, non-profit, Florida corporation tasked with creating and managing a workforce development service delivery system responsive to the needs of businesses and jobseekers.
