Dr. Charles F. Paterno, 90, Vero Beach

Dr. Charles F. Paterno, 90, died Feb. 11, 2010, at his home.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Vero Beach since 1989, coming from Rumson, N.J.

He attended St. Francis Preparatory School, graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1940 and obtained his medical degree from the Long Island College of Medicine.

He practiced medicine in Monmouth County, N.J., for 34 years, and was president of the medical board and director of surgery at Riverview Hospital.

He served in the Army during the Korean War and helped establish a MASH-type unit in California for wounded soldiers.

He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Rumson Country Club and Sea Bright Beach Club. He was a member of the Indian Trails Architectural Board and a supporter of Indian River Memorial Medical Center, where he served on the Executive Committee and was elected first male president of the auxiliary.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Paterno of Vero Beach; sons, Charles Paterno of Chapel Hill, N.C., William Paterno of Shrewsbury, N.J., and Christopher Paterno of Marina del Rey, Calif.; daughters, Patricia Flanagan of Great Falls, Va., Kathleen Knise of Mclean, Va., Carla Annese of Fanwood, N.J., Mary Schmidt of Farmingdale, N.J., Elizabeth Russell of Reston, Va., and Anne Kilgallon of Arlington, Va.; and 23 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach. A memorial and celebratory Mass will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Rumson at a later date.
