VERO BEACH — Literacy Services of Indian River County, a United Way agency, today announced a new online program, “ClickN READ,” that will be offered for a nominal donation to Indian River County residents, children and adults alike. The program will help local residents improve their basic reading skills. ClickN READ will allow the organization to expand its reach and teach more local residents how to read. It is estimated that 1 in 5 adults in Indian River County have substandard reading skills. “By offering ClickN READ we will be able to reach hundreds of more students by allowing them to improve basic reading skills at their own pace, in their own homes,” said Executive Director Mary Silva. The program was obtained through a special project grant received from the United Way of Indian River County. ClickN READ is the “world’s best home school phonics reading program” and is utilized with success throughout the country. It utilizes 100 interactive cartoon animated online phonics lessons. The program is designed for children as young as 4 years old as well as adults. It also can assist those individuals learning English as a second language. It identifies the five areas of reading instruction that have been shown to be effective in helping children and adults learn to read: 1) phonemic awareness, 2) phonics, 3) vocabulary development, 4) reading fluency, and 5) reading comprehension strategies. The organization will offer the program to local Indian River County residents for a nominal donation of $25 per student.
