VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach City Council agreed Tuesday to return some $880,000 to utility customers for money its former power provider, Florida Municipal Power Authority, was able to extract from its natural gas contracts. The FMPA locked in long-term gas contracts when prices were high which contributed in part to the soaring electric bills customers experienced last summer. The rebate will amount to about $15 per hours per 1,000 kilowatt hours, which is typical usage by Vero electric customers. The Council has yet to decide how the money will be distributed.”I just think the overcharge on fuel costs needs to be rebated back to the people who paid for it,” said Council man Brian Heady. “Electric customers prior to January 1 should get the money.Acting Electric Utility Director John Lee said he would crunch some numbers and come back to the council with a proposal of how to most equitably issue the rebates to the city’s approximately 33,400 customers.
