SEBASTIAN — Sebastian River Middle School eighth grader Courtney Hanson has received the 2009-2010 Governor’s Recognition Scholarship – a 4-year scholarship from the Florida Prepaid College Foundation valued at $16,000.
The scholarship is awarded to the middle-school student who most successfully answered the essay question, “What do you believe to be the legacy of a former Governor of the state of Florida?” Courtney wrote about the legacy of Governor William Pope Duval.
Courtney will receive a 4-Year University Tuition with Local Fee scholarship that is currently valued at close to $16,000. The scholarship contest was open to all eligible 7th and 8th grade students in the district as indentified by each middle school. Student recipients must graduate from high school and remain drug- and crime-free to receive the benefits of the scholarship.
Superintendent Harry La Cava made the announcement Monday.
Courtney is the daughter of Laura Graham and was supervised by her language arts teacher James McMullin.
